City councillors, officers and partners gathered at Hove Town Hall on the 13th July 2011 to explore the idea of a One Planet Framework for Brighton & Hove.
The Brighton & Hove City Sustainability Partnership has been working with One Planet Living exploring ideas with a goal for the future to ensure that Brighton and Hove can exist within its Ecological means. The 5 principles taken from the 10 One Planet Living Principles, which are vital to sustainability in Brighton and Hove, include: Zero carbon, zero waste, sustainable material, sustainable and local food and sustainable transport.
The opportunities for delivering the Framework via the City Council’s Commissioning Plan was discussed, along with an exploration of the 5 One Planet principles which have been prioritised in the framework and action planning to take work forward on each strand.
Within each of the 5 Principles, One Planet Living have projected targets and needs which are briefly outlined below:
Zero Carbon: 94% reduction in carbon emissions by 2050, by reducing emissions from existing buildings and investigating radical energy supply and distribution changes.
Zero Waste: Reductions of 80% commercial waste, 70% domestic recycling and 37% in waste generation, by ensuring waste generation decreases and by linking high rates of recycling with markets.
Sustainable and Local Food: 53% reduction in food footprint by consuming less meat and by making a slight reduction in consumption. Also by reducing processing.
Sustainable Transport: Transport is a key element in delivering the carbon target and can be achieved by re-engineering communities for local living. Therefore, local transport planning policies will need to be addressed.
Along with the targets and needs presented at the meeting, also highlighted were barriers to overcome and opportunities and strengths that already exist within the city.
