Steve Andrews and Ron Sutton are part of the Coldean Community Allotment, which began life in 2007. The allotment was set up so that everyone in the neighbourhood could interact, share skills and grow their own food.
They say: "Just 18 months ago our plot was an overgrown wilderness. But with a few hours of hard graft, we had a manageable plot. We planted Jerusalem artichokes, butternut squash, beetroot, red potatoes, radishes, onions and peppers. Not a bad result for first time growers."
"The Coldean Community Allotment started off as a half plot, with a view to people in the neighbourhood of all ages interacting and sharing skills. It was hard work and a learning process for the community workers themselves, as well as local community members."
"The following year planting parties and barbecues became frequent and during 2009, with growing your own vegetables appearing on everyone’s minds due to the recession, a full harvest was delivered, largely due to the perseverance of local volunteers."
"We have been featured in the Food Partnership magazine and are planning training on eco-awareness and permaculture for 2010."
Things at the community allotment are going great and there is lots of activity. A a new shed has been built and a barbecue during summer 2011 been on the pipeline. You can find out more at New Larchwood Community Cafe
