CampaignThere are a range of organisations you can get involved with, from smaller, grassroots community groups to larger campaign groups associated with larger charities.

Campaigning isn't just about marching or direct action and breaking into power stations. Most groups have a variety of aims, such as raising public awareness of issues through stalls and events, running campaigns on specific topics or promoting positive solutions to environmental problems. There is a lot going on out there!

Groups are generally run by dedicated, enthusiastic volunteers who meet regularly and getting involved is a great way to meet like-minded people. Below here some campaigns active in the city...

BH_10-10_thumb_medium163_64One idea is to campaign for a cut on carbon emission by 10% during 2010 hence the name  for a pledge which everyone can sign up to. Infact 10:10 is aimed at inspiring simple steps to cutting carbon in all aspects of life. Brighton and Hove was one of the first cities to sign up to the campaign and thousands people got involved. The past year 10:10 in Brighton and Hove has been very active, from recruiting its pioneers, organising 10:10:10 events and joining 350_logo_thumb_medium97_31 for the 350 EARTH Campaign.

WDM_picWorld Development Movement is a UK based anti-poverty campaigning organisation with a wide network of local groups. WDM's goal is to establish economic justice by tackling the root causes of poverty, working with campaigners in the global south to end harmful policies which put profit before people and the environment. WDM Brighton & Hove local group meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm at Brighton Peace & Environment Centre. The group hold stunts, demonstrations, public meetings and stalls. They always welcome new ideas and new energy, so go along to a meeting or visit their website to find out more.

greenpeace logoGreenpeace defends the natural world and promotes peace by investigating, exposing and confronting environmental abuse, and championing environmentally responsible solutions. Climate change isn't inevitable. The group states that we have the knowledge, skills and technologies to get ourselves out of this difficult situation. They argue that over the world people have woken up to the threat, and are working to reduce the use of fossil fuels, stop rainforest destruction and get power from clean energy. Still much more needs to be done. Get along to one of the Brighton group meetings and get involved!

climate_camp_bannerThe Climate Camp is a place for anyone who wants to take action on climate change,  for anyone who’s worried that the small steps we are taking aren’t enough to match the scale of the problem. There are many local climate camp groups around the country, the local one is the South Coast Climate Camp. At the camps these "neighbourhoods" have each their own camping space and kitchen. Many of the local groups continue taking decentralised action against climate change throughout the year, and so joining one is a great way to get involved.
